Direct Support Professional- Day Program

POSITION TITLE:  Hopkins Community Participation Supports – Direct Support Professional and Self Advocacy Mentor  

POSITION CLASSIFICATION:  Part-Time Direct Support Professional – 70 hrs bi-weekly

NATURE OF POSITION: 

Hopkins Community Participation provides personalized support to adults with diverse abilities and operates out of the C.D. Hopkins Centre under the supervision of the Community Participation Manager. All United Voices is the agency’s self-advocacy committee. We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Self Advocacy Mentor.  

Hours will be Monday with All United Voices self-advocacy. 

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Hopkins CPS. 

Training to provide support in 24-hour care sites will be provided, and if necessary staff will be temporarily assigned to provide support as necessary. 

RESPONSIBILTIES: 

Provide physical and emotional support to participants as needed; This may include personal care related to hygiene needs. Make provisions for participant’s safety. Plan community activities and opportunities as it relates to participants interests and goals. Assume the role of Primary Direct Support Professional for 1 to 3 participants.  

Duties will include but not limited to: 

  • Performing/Assisting with personal care  
  • Assistance with meals and snacks 
  • Create and deliver appropriate opportunities and activities for adults with diverse needs. 
  • Maintain a professional demeanor when communicating with participants, their families and caregivers.  
  • Aid participant(s) to establish personal goals, develop a schedule to achieve these goals, and track their progress. 
  • Support participants in a diverse range of community locations and environments as an essential element of the program. 
  • Collaborate with other staff members to create a supportive and positive work environment. 
  • Advocate for participants in an appropriate manner. 
  • Administer medication and maintain medication logs. 
  • Participate in annual ISP reviews for participants upon request. 
  • Maintain complete and confidential records for each participant. 
  • Attend and take part in staff meetings as needed. 
  • Follow all internal financial policies when using petty cash and participant finances. Follow policy and procedural items established by the agency for the health, safety and welfare of the participants in the program, staff, volunteers and members of the community. Follow all policy and procedural items established by the agency, as they pertain to employee conduct and performance. Follow all Occupational Health and Safety policies. 
  • Offer guidance and support to the All United Voices self-advocacy group. 
  • Help self-advocates develop the skills and confidence needed to advocate for themselves and others 
  • Listen attentively and provide suggestions and feedback 
  • Assist self-advocates in setting committee goals and developing strategies for achieving them 
  • Encourage and seek opportunities to participate in self-advocacy groups and other advocacy-related activities 
  • Provide resources and information to help self-advocates understand their rights and navigate the advocacy process 
  • Advocate when necessary and help them navigate challenges or obstacles they may encounter in their advocacy efforts. 
  • Help self-advocates plan and facilitate events.  

JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Frequent bending, twisting and pushing  
  • Standard First Aid & Level C CPR
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
  • The candidate must have received, at minimum, a high school diploma 
  • A valid ‘G’ driver’s license 
  • Must be reliable, flexible and able to work independently as well as in a team
